EarlyFoods – Evolution and impact of early food production systems
The Domestication
of plants and animals
were some of the most significant cultural and evolutionary transitions in the history of our species, yet they are also some of the most debated and controversial subjects in archaeology and related sciences.
EarlyFoods will advance our understanding of the origins and changing nature of early food production systems, and their impacts on past natural environments.
Our understanding of the nature, timing and place of early plant and animal domestication are still highly fragmented and biased toward a long held dichotomous view that contrasts foraging with agriculture. This model has failed to explain the wider variety of adaptive solutions employed by human groups across the globe, and has thus limited our capacity to understand the drivers of demographic boom and bust, social complexity and early anthropogenic transformations of natural environments.
